Sample Answer

Part 1: Hometown (家乡)

考官: "Good morning/afternoon. My name is... And this is your speaking test. Can you tell me your full name, please?"

Alright, now I'd like to ask you some questions about yourself. Let's talk about your hometown."

问题 1: Where is your hometown?

Sample Answer: "My hometown is a coastal city called Qingdao, which is located in the eastern part of China's Shandong Province. It's probably best known in China for its Tsingtao Beer and its beautiful beaches, like the famous Golden Sand Beach."

  • 词汇丰富:使用了 "coastal city", "located in", "probably best known for" 等表达,比简单说 "It's in Shandong" 要好得多。

问题 2: What do you like most about your hometown?

Sample Answer: "What I like most about Qingdao is its unique blend of history and modernity. On one hand, you have the historic German-style architecture in the old town, which gives the city a very distinctive European charm. On the other hand, you have the modern skyscrapers and the bustling commercial areas. This contrast really makes it a fascinating place to live and explore."

点评:

  • 观点明确:直接点出核心观点 "unique blend of history and modernity"。
  • 高级词汇和连接词:使用了 "blend", "on one hand... on the other hand", "contrast", "fascinating" 等词汇和结构,展示了语言能力。

问题 3: Is there anything you dislike about your hometown?

Sample Answer: "Well, if I have to pick something, I'd say the traffic during the peak tourist season in the summer can be quite challenging. The city gets incredibly crowded, and it can take a long time to get from one place to another. However, I understand that this is a common problem for many popular tourist destinations, so it's not something that I dislike too much."

  • 表达委婉:使用 "if I have to pick something", "can be quite challenging", "not something that I dislike too much" 等短语,让语气非常礼貌和得体。

Part 2: Cue Card (话题卡)

考官: "Now, I'm going to give you a topic. I'd like you to talk about it for one to two minutes. Before you talk, you have one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some notes if you wish."

Cue Card:

Describe a time you had to be polite. You should say:

  • what the situation was
  • who you were polite to
  • why you had to be polite
  • and explain how you felt about being polite in that situation.

Sample Answer (考生陈述,约1分45秒):

"Alright, I'd like to talk about a time when I had to be very polite, and that was when I returned a faulty product to an electronics store last month.

The situation was quite frustrating. I had bought a new pair of wireless headphones online, and when I received them, I discovered that the right earbud wasn't working at all. I was really looking forward to using them, so I was quite disappointed.

I had to be polite to the customer service representative at the store. Her name was Lily, I think. She was the one who had to deal with my complaint and process the return.

The main reason I had to be polite was that I knew it wasn't her fault personally. The product was likely defective from the factory, and she was just doing her job. I've found that being angry or rude rarely solves a problem; in fact, it usually makes the other person defensive and less willing to help you. I wanted a smooth and efficient solution, and I believed that politeness was the best way to achieve that.

In terms of how I felt, I have to say I felt quite proud of myself afterwards. Initially, I was a bit annoyed, but I took a deep breath, smiled, and approached her calmly. I explained the problem clearly without raising my voice. To my relief, she was very helpful and understanding, probably because of my approach. She apologized for the inconvenience and immediately processed a full refund for me. It was a great reminder that treating others with respect, even in a frustrating situation, can lead to a much better outcome for everyone involved."

  • 语言流畅自然:使用了自然的连接词和口语化表达,如 "I have to say", "To my relief", "It was a great reminder that..."。

Part 3: Two-way Discussion (深入讨论)

We've been talking about a time you had to be polite. Let's discuss this topic more broadly."

问题 1: In what situations do people in your country have to be particularly polite?

Sample Answer: "In my country, I think people are expected to be particularly polite in formal settings. For example, when dealing with government officials, teachers, or elderly people, there's a strong cultural emphasis on showing respect. Another key situation is in a business environment, like during a job interview or a business meeting. Using formal titles, such as '经理' (Manager) or '老师' (Teacher), and maintaining a certain level of formality is crucial. Also, when asking for a favor or receiving something, people often use polite set phrases like '请问' (Excuse me) or '麻烦您了' (Sorry to trouble you) to soften the request."

2: Do you think people are becoming less polite these days compared to the past? Why?

Sample Answer: "That's an interesting question. I think it's a mixed picture. On one hand, in our fast-paced, digital world, there's a sense of informality that's seeping into our interactions. For instance, people might be more direct in their emails or text messages, and the constant use of smartphones can sometimes make people seem less engaged in face-to-face conversations.

However, on the other hand, I also believe that there's a growing awareness about the importance of politeness and mental well-being. Concepts like 'emotional intelligence' and 'mindfulness' are becoming more mainstream, and people are realizing that being kind and respectful is not just good for others, but also for their own happiness and social harmony
